My first experience with this land of vast lakes and stunning nature was through my summer volunteer work with Drakkar Outdoor in Rök, Värmland. 2023, when I was asked to spend the winter overthere, I admit I had to think about it. But I had to take on the opportunity, and so I travelled there at the end of October. It turned out to be the toughest winter in years. And I enjoyed it! Summer 2024, I also assisted with the overall management and decided to spend another the winter at the location. And so, in 2024 I was in Sweden for 6.5 months, mainly in the Värmland region. Most of the walks described so far are thus in that region.
Sweden has the Right of Public Access - 'Allemansrätten', which gives everyone the right to enjoy nature. In brief, this means: Do not disturb and do not destroy anything! Do not only bare in mind nature and animals, but also the landowners. Most of the guidelines are quite logical. You can download a helpful brochure on this topic from the Naturvardsverket, which is available in multiple languages.
